Act Your Age

As we mentioned in last month’s blog post ‘Making the Most of Your Twenties – Procedures for Prevention’, the best approach to warding off the signs of ageing depends significantly on your age.

What you’re looking for in a beauty product or a non-surgical cosmetic treatment is going to be completely different once you’ve reached your thirties, so this is the decade to which we’re devoting this post.

When, despite your best efforts, you’re beginning to notice fine lines and wrinkles (especially around your eyes, nose and mouth), it’s important to remember that while you shouldn’t give up on preventative measures, the time has come to start looking at procedures that can help address these signs of ageing.

The anti-ageing industry is vast, so naturally there are a number of products and procedures available to aid you on your quest. In fact, there’s so much help available that knowing where to start can be confusing, to say the least.

To help you get to grips with your options, take a look at the treatments below to make sure you’re able to feel great about growing older!

Laser IPL

Intense pulsed light treatments (also known as a phototherapy) are a non-laser, non-ablative skin rejuvenation therapy. IPL treatment works by directing broad spectrum light energy into the skin’s deeper layers whilst leaving the surface intact, so it’s less invasive than some of the other procedures mentioned here.

The penetrating light used in IPL converts to heat energy in the middle layer of the skin which increases its production of collagen - the substance that gives tissue its rigidity. This stimulation of collagen production results in improved skin tone and texture, so is great for anyone looking to ‘freshen up’ their appearance.

Botulinum Toxin Injections

Botulinum toxin injections are an effective way to treat both fine lines and deeper wrinkles. Also known as ‘wrinkle relaxers’ these injections smooth out wrinkles by blocking the signals between specific nerves and muscles, preventing them from contracting and causing furrows in the skin.

Dermal Fillers

As we age our skin loses hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar that absorbs moisture in the skin to keep it well hydrated and looking youthful.

The majority of dermal fillers are made up of this hyaluronic acid, so when injected into problem areas they work to attract and hold moisture within the skin, rejuvenating it and filling fine lines. They can also be used to add subtle volume where necessary.

Read our previous blog post on dermal fillers for a more in-depth examination of this treatment.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels come in different strengths, and each of these strengths is best suited to different skin types. For those in their thirties, a medium depth chemical peel will give a more dramatic result than the superficial or ‘light’ peel recommended for those in their twenties.

The solution used in a medium-depth chemical peel is usually derived from trichloroacetic acid, which penetrates deeper into the skin to remove the top layer. This trauma to the skin increases collagen production and cell growth as a part of the healing process, so once the damaged top layer peels away the skin below appears significantly healthier, with a reduction in the appearance of sun damage, pigmentation and wrinkles.

Save Face

The non-surgical cosmetic procedures mentioned above should all be carried out by suitably experienced practitioners. Unfortunately, as there is currently no regulation surrounding their administration (see our blog post on the topic) there are many ‘cowboy’ practitioners who put people’s safety at risk.

Save Face are committed to connecting people with safe, credible and above all, qualified practitioners who use safe products in safe environments. If you are interested undergoing any non-surgical cosmetic treatment, use the Save Face search engine to ensure you put yourself in the safest hands possible.
