Overview

HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a non-surgical treatment that can be used to tighten skin or reduce fat, depending on the target tissue and frequency used. On the face and neck, it can be used to improve skin laxity, soften fine lines, and give a subtle “lifting” effect without surgery or injections.

As we age, collagen and elastin – the proteins that keep skin firm and elastic – gradually become less dense and organised. This contributes to sagging skin, drooping brows, jowls, and a loss of definition along the jawline and neck. HIFU skin tightening can help firm and tighten the skin over time. It does this by targeting the deeper layers of the skin and underlying tissues, which in turn causes the contraction of collagen fibres and stimulates the formation of new collagen and elastin.

HIFU treatment is an option for people who want a non-surgical approach to skin tightening and lifting that has minimal downtime and gradual, natural-looking results.

HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It uses focused ultrasound energy to heat specific layers of tissue beneath the skin’s surface, without damaging the outer layer.

HIFU treatment works by delivering precise amounts of thermal energy to targeted depths. This controlled heat:

  • Stimulates the production of new collagen
  • Helps to contract and tighten existing collagen fibres
  • Gradually firms and lifts the treated area over the weeks and months that follow

Unlike lasers or radiofrequency, which primarily work on more superficial layers, HIFU can reach deeper structural layers of the skin and soft tissues. This includes the superficial muscular aponeurotic system, or SMAS – the same layer targeted in some surgical facelifts.

It’s important to receive HIFU treatment from a properly trained and competent practitioner using a reputable, medical-grade device.

HIFU facial treatments are most commonly used on the face and neck, but certain devices can also treat areas of the body.

Typical treatment areas include:

  • Full face
  • Brow and forehead (for a subtle brow lift)
  • Cheeks and mid-face
  • Jawline and jowls
  • Chin
  • Neck and under-chin area
  • Décolletage (upper chest)

Some systems may be used on body areas such as:

  • Upper arms
  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Knees

Not all devices for a HIFU treatment are the same, and not all practitioners will treat every area. Your practitioner will advise you on what is appropriate and safe for your individual concerns.

The cost of HIFU depends on the area(s) being treated (for example, full face and neck versus a small target area), the type and quality of the device used, and the practitioner’s experience and clinic location.

As a general guide:

  • Smaller areas (such as brow or partial face) may start from around £250–£400
  • Full face and neck HIFU treatment costs can range from £500–£1,500+

Be cautious of very low prices or deal-based promotions, especially if the device brand is unclear or if treatments are offered outside a clinical setting. Low-cost offers can indicate the use of low-quality or non-medical devices, insufficient training or supervision, or a lack of appropriate safety standards.

Always prioritise safety, experience, and technology quality over price.

HIFU treatment works by stimulating your own collagen, so results develop gradually rather than instantly.

The typical development of HIFU results is as follows:

  • Some people notice a mild tightening effect immediately after treatment
  • More noticeable improvements usually appear over 2–3 months as new collagen forms
  • Results can last between 6–18 months, depending on age, skin condition, lifestyle, and the area treated

Many people choose to have maintenance HIFU treatment every 12–18 months to maintain results. Your practitioner will recommend a personalised treatment plan.

One of the advantages of HIFU treatment is that downtime is usually minimal, and most people can return to normal activities straight away.

Common things to be aware of and aftercare advice include:

  • You may experience mild redness, tenderness, or slight swelling immediately after treatment, which usually settles within a few hours to a few days
  • Some people feel a tingling or “tight” sensation in the treated area for a short period
  • Avoid very hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and intense exercise for 24–48 hours (or as advised by your practitioner)
  • Avoid applying strong active skincare (such as retinoids or acids) on the treated area for several days, unless advised otherwise
  • Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum SPF daily

If you experience significant pain, prolonged redness, bruising, skin changes, or any symptoms that concern you, contact your practitioner promptly for advice.

All treatments carry a degree of risk. HIFU treatment is generally considered safe when a reputable, medical-grade device is used, and the practitioner is adequately trained, understands facial anatomy, and follows appropriate safety protocols.

Potential side effects and risks can include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness or discomfort during and shortly after treatment
  • Temporary numbness or tingling
  • Mild bruising

Less common but more significant risks may include:

  • Temporary nerve irritation (e.g. transient weakness or altered sensation in small areas of the face)
  • Rarely, localised burns or changes to skin texture if energy is delivered incorrectly or with inappropriate settings

All risks and potential complications should be discussed with you during your consultation before any treatment is agreed.

To reduce the risk of complications, a HIFU treatment should only be carried out by a suitably trained practitioner using an approved device, in a clinical environment.

HIFU treatment can be uncomfortable because the ultrasound energy works by heating deep tissues. Most people describe the sensation as short bursts of heat, or a “tingling” or “prickling” feeling beneath the skin. Discomfort levels can vary depending on the area treated, device settings, and individual sensitivity.

Your practitioner may suggest:

  • Taking simple pain relief (such as paracetamol) before treatment, if appropriate for you
  • Adjusting the energy settings or technique to improve comfort

The treatment should not be intolerably painful. If you’re worried about discomfort, discuss this with your practitioner before you proceed.

A full consultation and medical history are essential to determine if HIFU is right for you.

HIFU may be suitable if:

  • You have mild to moderate skin laxity (for example, early jowls or a slightly sagging jawline or neck)
  • You want HIFU skin tightening as a non-surgical option for skin tightening and lifting
  • You’re looking for gradual, natural-looking improvement rather than a dramatic change

HIFU may not be suitable if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have open wounds, active skin infections, or severe acne in the treatment area
  • You have certain medical implants, metal plates, or electronic devices (such as some pacemakers) in or near the treatment area
  • You have very severe skin laxity where surgical procedures may be more appropriate
  • You have certain medical conditions or are taking medicines that your practitioner advises make treatment unsuitable

Your practitioner will discuss your medical history, current medications, and expectations to assess suitability and ensure that HIFU treatment is the right option for you.

If you are planning a special event, bear in mind that HIFU results develop over several weeks to months, rather than immediately. In this situation, other treatments may be more suitable.
