Next in our ‘What Is?’ blog series, we’re turning our attention to the non-surgical eye lift. The eyes are often the first place to really be affected by the signs of ageing. From loose, droopy eyelids to under eye hollows; dark circles and bags to heavy-looking brows, our eyes can make us look tired or sad when in fact, we’re feeling quite the opposite.

Whilst invasive surgical procedures used to be the go-to treatment for eyes affected by ageing, for those who are not ready to consider surgical options it is possible to achieve real improvements with non-surgical treatment. Advances in non-surgical cosmetic procedures mean that it’s possible to rejuvenate the eyes without considerable down-time, so we’ve put together some need-to-know information for anyone looking to fix their unhappy eyes.

What is a Non-Surgical Eye Lift?

A non-surgical eye lift is a procedure that gives the appearance of the eyes having been ‘lifted’ without surgery.

Dermal fillers and botulinum toxin injections are used in combination to restore volume around the eye and to ‘lift’ the eyebrow (by relaxing the muscles in the forehead). For more information on either of these treatments, see the Save Face information pages.

After a non-surgical eye lift, eyes appear more relaxed, refreshed and generally wider and more ‘awake.’

How Does it work?

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which binds to water in the skin in order to make it appear plumper. In the case of a non-surgical eye lift, these fillers are injected along the lower orbital rim to ‘fill in’ either the hollows below eye bags or pronounced tear troughs, significantly improving their appearance.

The botulinum toxin injections involved in a non-surgical eye lift block the signal to the muscle that pulls the eyebrows down, smoothing the skin around the eyes and leaving the natural arch a little higher, so that eyes appear wider and more ‘awake’.

The positive effects of dermal fillers last between 6 and 18 months, while botulinum toxin injections usually last between 3 and 4 months.

These non-invasive treatment works effectively to improve the appearance of the eyes with minimal down time. Costs are significantly lower than surgical options, and there are fewer risks of permanent, unwanted side effects.

Results of dermal fillers are evident immediately after the procedure is carried out, and the results of botulinum toxin injections can usually be seen within two weeks of the initial treatment.

Side effects and risks

In safe hands, the side effects of both types of injection are minimal, but can include redness, swelling and bruising at injection sites.

Is it right for you?

While both these treatments are extremely effective, both are best carried out on less pronounced folds and wrinkles, and usually have the most significant effect on those under the age of 55.

These procedures have no effect on excess skin or fat or discolouration of the skin, which can also contribute to an aged appearance. If you are looking to address either of these problems, other procedures should be considered.
